Lessons for the Future

The unprecedented compound disaster took many lives and changed many others forever.
It taught us that everyday life with family and friends is something precious.
Today, with disasters closer to us than ever before, we hope to remind people of these events that must not be forgotten.
The challenges Fukushima came to face can be a clear guide for the future.
With these lessons to share, the Great East Japan Earthquake and Nuclear Disaster Memorial Museum was founded.

  • Know, learn
    (exhibition)

Around 200 exhibits convey the damage caused by the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear accident. There are also videos with testimony from survivors, touch panel displays, models, and more, enabling you to deepen your understanding of this unprecedented multi-disaster.

  • Experience, think
    (education)

You can do fieldwork by hopping on a bus and touring the Fukushima towns of Futaba and Namie and listen to educational lectures from relevant narrators, allowing you to re-live the multi-disaster and get a feel for the current situation with reconstruction. And after that, there’s a workshop where you can deepen your learning even further.

  • Hear firsthand stories
    (narration)

You can listen firsthand to the stories of people who experienced the disaster. The narrators were living in various areas and had various roles, and they share different episodes about things like how they escaped from the earthquake, tsunami, or nuclear accident.
